Creating a Holiday "Trio" Wreath

Creating a Holiday "Trio" Wreath

Decorate Your Front Door With a Holiday Trio Wreath

This holiday, try an elegant twist on the traditional front door wreath by creating a lovely trio of wreaths!  Not only is it fun to make but, the results will amaze you! Here is what you will need to get started.

  • greenery (I prefer two kinds)

  • floral wire

  • wire cutters

  • metal ring or wreath form

  • ribbon

  • hot glue (optional)

Step 1: Gather Your Greens

Whether you are foraging in your own back yard, traipsing through the woods or visiting your local garden store, the first step to making your wreaths is to gather your greens.  I am lucky enough to have pine trees and boxwoods in my backyard so off I went to cut and collect!  You can use any type of evergreen or winter greenery for your wreath.

Step 2: Find a Form

I have chosen to make a trio of round wreaths but, square or rectangular wreaths would be very stylish!  I found the metal rings (forms) for my wreaths in the floral section of my local hobby store.  Since I knew that I was creating a trio of joined wreaths and that each wreath would need to be relatively thin and small, I chose a single thin wire (8 inches in diameter). Remember that forms are sold in a variety of shapes and styles so the sky is the limit on what you can create.

Step 3: Wiring Your Greenery

It’s time to begin creating your wreath!  I chose to use two different types of greenery for my wreaths.  The 1st layer is pine and then, a second layer of boxwood is added on top.  By making two layers, the wreaths have both depth and texture to their look.  For the pine branches simply select a branch and (using floral wire) wrap the wire around the branch to secure it on to your base.  Once my pine layer is complete, I have added a layer of boxwood branches to the wreath.  As you shape your wreath you may need to trim up the branches to compliment the shape you are creating.

Helpful Tip:

As you can see from the picture above, I choose to leave the wire attached to the spool and continually wrap and secure the branches.  Once my two layers of greenery are complete, I cut and secure the wire to the form so that it is hidden.

Step 4: Styling and Connecting your Wreaths

Once all three wreaths are assembled it is time to style and connect your wreaths together.  You can do this in a number of ways based on your personal preference.  Based on my front door and house color, I have chosen a shiny gold ribbon to accent my trio.  You may use ribbon and a hot glue gun to simply loop your wreaths together or use a sewing knot like I  did. You could even use small bows at the top of each wreath to connect the forms together.  It’s your choice and your chance to get creative so go for it!

Step 5: Hang and Enjoy!

Whether you use a “Command” hook or wreath hanger, select the right height to hang your wreaths.  Now - here comes my favorite part - step back and admire your fabulous work!
